WHY INVEST IN THE PROTECTION OF PIGEONS AND OTHER BIRDS?
The aesthetic and environmental aspects
Pigeons with their excrement disfigure and pollute monuments, residential
buildings, industrial buildings and warehouses.
With the health aspects
Pigeon excrement is a source of many infectious diseases: Chlamydia,
Psittacosis, HY supra-sensitive form of pneumonia, salmonella and other.
From an economic point of view
Bird excrement pollutes and destroys all the materials so there are required
investments for cleaning and repairing the damage caused to buildings,
monuments, and industrial facilities.
Although the societies for the protection of animals are not particularly happy that the space near the people is being limited to the birds, the fact is that birds sometimes can be a source of infection.
Birds more and more share living space with people and inhabit the nearest environment. With accustoming to coexistence with humans they access to the abundance of food that is discarded into the environment. They use for resting, areas in front of and above the windows, balconies and fences, so there remains their excrement. Architecture of buildings on which they reside provides them protection from natural enemies, and is used for nesting.
For human, other than aesthetics, it represents a health risk. As the bird's natural behavior disfigure and damage buildings, some tenants use unacceptable methods of salving the bird (killing birds, poisoning and other aggressive methods). There are many acceptable methods and systems of deterrence, harmless to birds.
Mechanical needle protection system
There are used to protect the roof ridge, projection, Sims, balconies, external air conditioning unit, antenna beams, beams and the protection of gutter (grooves).
It consists of a series of high and low needles from the base which does not respond to atmospheric changes (metal base ensures long life. It can’t break due to the cold and heat). Protection is a multi functional (if necessary angle of needles can be changed). Needle protection can be supplied in colure of facades (becoming almost invisible).
Made this way it will physical prevent the landing of pigeons and other birds in the protected areas and protect the object.
Installation is simple and is performed using pins, threads, gluing, nailing, silicone or consolidation with tape tension. Protection system is safe for birds because it don’t harms or kills them.
Mechanical net protection system
In a discreet way it protects windows, balconies, loggias, porches, skylight (atrium). Nets are made of polyethylene or polypropylene in several colors, different thickness of fiber and mesh square size. Metal nets are made of Inox or zinc networks.
SVIBOR – Collecting Data on Projects in Republic of Croatia
Project code: 3-03-286
BIRDS: TANKS AND TRANSMITTERS OF DISEASE TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS
Main researcher: GREGURIĆ, JELENA
Summary: During 1991., 1992. and 1993. urban pigeons have been regularly
investigated (monitoring), yet the pigeons that have been bred, free-living
birds from wild and pets birds (parrots, etc.) were examined periodically.
The Research was focused on the biology, ecology and health of these birds.
These studies have confirmed that the most widespread bird diseases are
Chlamydiosis / Ornitozas / Psittacosis, especially in urban pigeons that are
64.71% positive. Monitoring the distribution of urban pigeons in Zagreb it
was indentified that the most population of urban pigeon (up to several
thousand) resides at area of first Croatian oil factory "Zvijezda" where
they find food.
To determine what effect pigeons have on human health, the part of employees
in the first Croatian oil factory "Zvijezda" was tested and their blood was
examined on presence antibodies to Chlamydia psittaci. It was found that
18.84% of employees are positive on Chlamydia (epidemic). Such a high
percentage of positive people who are in regular contact with pigeons
indicate that pigeons are a constant infection source of this disease for
humans and domestic animals. Such epidemiological studies are still in
progress, especially on cattle farms. Besides the health problems they are
causing great economic damages, by eating a large amount of grain in food
factories, silos, etc. (1 pigeon eats 23,40 kg per year). According to
officials from the First Croatian Oil Factory "Zvijezda" pigeons eat
sunflower and rapeseed in the amount of DEM 280000 per year which shows how
much damage they inflict. It was also determined that the pigeons remain in
the zoo areas in a large number, and therefore pose a threat to the health
of zoo animals and for visitors. Beside serological tests, there were
carried out and parasitological, hematological, bacteriological,
pathological-anatomical, histological, and some toxicological and
biochemical tests. It is known that birds find food in agricultural areas,
trash heaps and landfills. Therefore, there were examined the landfills
(Zagreb and Split) and dumps on some of our islands (Vrgada, Pag, city of
Pag and Novalja). Solution of birds residing at landfills and trash heaps
(dumps) are in waste management. In this way, the environment is protected
and also prevents the birds residing at landfills and trash heaps. In regard
of residing large number of pigeons at area of food-factories, fodders,
silos, livestock farms, we were acquired advices by several times to reduce
the size of the population in these places. To reduce the number of pigeons
it is necessary to use methods that are harmless to human health and
environmentally justified. Therefore, experiments were conducted in which
such methods are used, tests are still pending. By reducing the number of
pigeons, the risk of spreading disease reduces, either as a source of
infection or carrier of disease.
Research goals: These researches aimed with regular monitoring of birds that live near the man to identify those diseases that can be transmitted to humans and animals and that can immediately act according to the rules of the Veterinary Public Health. This means that we do not need to wait for a disease to appear and then start with diagnosis, treatment and eradication of the disease, but it must be detected in advance and prepare for its prevention and eradication. Our researches of pigeons from three different ecological environments: city pigeon, bred pigeon, wild pigeon, showed that in a large percentage only city pigeons are infected and invaded with various pathogens and parasites. This situation highlights the need to reduce the number of city pigeons. This reduction should not go below biological minimum, and also must apply the methods that are environmentally justified. These researches are necessary to continue, primarily to identify the diseases on time and therefore protect health of people and animals. Further, is necessary that this investigation extended to mammals, as indicated the test results of Chlamydia psittaci in cattle and sheep, especially now when the micro reactions of complement fixation for Chl. psittaci has been established, and which was done until recently by Virus Department Croatian National Institute of Public Health. Due to the high cost of ingredients (putty, etc.), setting other methods like IF or ELISA is in preparation, and depends only on the price and financial capabilities. From this follows that there should be arranged a veterinary epidemiological center, which would be beyond any administration, this is the recommendation of the World Health Organization. In this way it would be avoided the administration of various governing bodies, because it is known that the administration always limits and is limiting the effectiveness of such services (that deal with suppression of diseases), which must act immediately and accurately.
